East Thirty-Six brings upon all good memories for me. An intimate 1920’s styled space with well-made craft cocktails and savoury shareable plates that hit the spot. Everything is intricately thought out, from the tinctures of the cocktails to the daily-made pickled offerings.

With the current Fall and approaching Winter, East Thirty-Six has made a suitable cocktail menu to match. Located at 36 Wellington St. East, this space serves cocktails, wine and gourmet shareable plates.

During this evening, we had a taste of four very diverse cocktails. From aromatic to dark and nutty, there was offerings from all sides of the cocktail palate:

  1. The St-Germainbeefeater, st-germain elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, syrup & cava
  2. Apothecaryhayman’s london dry, hayman’s sloe gin, tonic syrup, lemon juice, rosemary tincture & perrier
  3. Nutcracker – lot 40 rye, drambuie, house spiced rum, walnut bitters & black cardamom
  4. Night Capp – coffee vanilla infused bourbon, macadamia nut syrup & espresso

I had two favourites of the four cocktails. St. Germain has beefeater gin with elderflower liquer, and after a shake topped off with cava. It was perfect. The Apothecary once poured has a gradient appearance, and tropical deep house would instantaneously play in your head, it was sweet and the aromatics of rosemary really took over.

Along with our cocktails, we were presented with a string of shareable plates. Charcuterie is an ideal way to start, and what was exceptionally different about this board is that it included burrata! The chilled, tofu-texture cheese was perfect to nibble along with the cured meats and olives. I’ve had food items from East Thirty-Six for dinner, and have fond memories of the sweetbreads and octopus.

There’s more delights spread over more hours this month… East Thirty-Six is now open for lunch Tuesday-Friday from 11:30AM-2PM for the entire month of December!

Also, no regular fries are expected here! Fries special to East Thirty-Six are topped with chicken skin crackling. A great fit dipping it along with the lemon aioli. As seen in the dish presentations, each dish is made for a communal dining experience. Sharing is a must.

We were clearly big fans of the heart-shaped salami – the first time I’ve seen salami in this form.

**An added bonus, I have a recipe to create the same St. Germain:

SHAKEN/DOUBLE STRAINED INTO COUPE GLASS
  • 1 OZ of gin
  • 0.5 OZ St Germain
  • Splash of lemon juice
  • Splash of simple syrup
  • Topped with cava and lemon twist to garnish

If you’re looking for a bar to taste craft cocktails or an evening to snack away on truly gourmet sharing plates, East Thirty-Six is a place you have got to try! I’ll most certainly make my way down once again for their addictive fries and fingers-crossed, sweet breads!
